Orchids of Crete
Serapias

The following photos were taken during our holiday in Western Crete in 1998.

Serapias comes from the Egyptian god Serapis, the god of fertility. It was thought that these orchids were aphrodisiacs. These orchids are very easy to identify as Serapias but very difficult to assign to the correct group. If anyone has any suggestions about what group of Serapias the following orchids belong to, I would be very glad to hear from you

Reference books used: "The Orchids of Crete and Karpathos" by Alibertis Anntonis, "Europäische Wildorchideen" by Pierre Delforge and Daniel Tyteca, "Wild Flowers of Crete" by George Sfikas and "Farbaatlas Medirerrane Pflanzen" by Andreas Bärtels..
